[March 16, 2016] SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sixty-five healthcare workers voted to improve patient care at Mercy McMahon Terrace, an outpatient facility in Sacramento, by joining SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW).

The Mercy McMahon Terrace employees include licensed vocational nurses, resident care aides, resident care clerks, activities assistants, administrative assistants, cooks, maintenance, food service, housekeepers, receptionists and transporters.

With the March 15 election at Mercy McMahon Terrace, more than 1,900 healthcare workers throughout California have joined SEIU-UHW since April 2015. Victories last month included 110 health educators from Kaiser Permanente in Northern California, 90 employees at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, Calif. and 52 workers at Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria, Calif.

By joining the union, the Mercy McMahon Terrace employees will be able to help SEIU-UHW’s campaign to fully fund Medi-Cal, the program that provides health coverage to low-income seniors and people with disabilities in California.

In addition, Mercy McMahon Terrace employees can help SEIU-UHW’s campaign to pass a statewide ballot initiative that would gradually raise California’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2021. The measure is on track to qualify for the Nov. 8 ballot, which the California Secretary of State will announce by March 22. According to the Field Poll, 68 percent of registered California voters support the initiative.
