4 Things to Think About before You Retire
Speak to a Financial Advisor
If you are preparing to retire, we highly recommend that you speak to a financial advisor, whether at your bank or a personal advisor before retiring. It is crucial for you to understand your retirement finances, including savings, investments, and potential income streams. A financial advisor can help you create a comprehensive retirement plan tailored to your goals and circumstances, and work with you to ensure financial security in your retirement years.
Make Sure Your Healthcare Is in Order
Review your health insurance plan before retirement to ensure comprehensive coverage for all aspects of care, including general, eye, and dental care. Before retirement, you should have a full understanding of the costs, coverage limitations, and potential gaps in your insurance. This will allow you to make informed decisions about your healthcare needs during retirement and avoid unexpected expenses and ensure access to necessary medical services.
Meet with Social Security Officials
Meeting with the Social Security office allows you to understand your eligibility, benefits, and the best time to start claiming Social Security payments. This meeting provides clarity on how Social Security fits into your overall retirement income strategy and attempts to maximize your benefits for a secure retirement.
Create a Healthcare Directive
Creating health directives, such as a living will or healthcare power of attorney, is essential for outlining your wishes regarding medical care in the event anything happens to you. These documents ensure your preferences are known and followed, providing peace of mind for you and your loved ones during challenging times.
SEIU-UHW provides several financial trainings for members, including Financial Planning that includes an additional 1-on-1 meeting with a financial counselor, and What’s a Living Trust? What about a Will? Do I Need One? facilitated by attorneys at the Housing and Economic Rights Advocates located in San Francisco. These trainings are online.
