WE ARE #UNITED4ALL

NOV. 3  CAMPAIGN UPDATE

It’s official! UHW members have elected the coworkers who will lead us through negotiations with management into our next contract. These leaders will stand up to management and deliver on our bargaining priorities. Members from each healthcare system or facility has their own bargaining team. However, we know that our healthcare employers are working together, so we making sure we also work together across hospital chains and facilities in our United for All 2023 Campaign. So let’s meet the 2023 SEIU-UHW United for All Bargaining Teams!

Kaiser Bargaining Team

Not every bargaining team seat required an election. In cases where an SEIU-UHW member was nominated and unopposed, they were added to the bargaining team. In cases where two or more members were nominated, an election was held for UHW members in those locations to vote. The raw tallies and results from those elections are below.

GET TALLIES FOR ALL ELECTIONS HERE

Our success at the bargaining table depends on workers who step up to lead and take responsibility for the work that will be needed to ensure we get the contract we need next year.

Congratulations to those who stepped up to lead on what will likely be a tough campaign to get management to recognize our hard work, the sacrifices we made during the pandemic, and the economic reality of living in this expensive state. Under our fellow members’ leadership, there’s no doubt we will stay strong and united, and get a great contract.

OCT. 17 CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Extra Money Is Coming: Here’s What to Do

Extra money is coming our way – put it aside for your own personal strike fund. In 2023, we want to accomplish big things with our new union contract: win better pay, protect our benefits, improve staffing, and much more. But management has their own agenda, and if we want to win a strong contract and ensure improvements, we’re going to have to be ready to fight, including going on strike for two weeks if have to.

Money is on the way that we can bank to help us prepare to go on strike:

  • California Middle-Class Tax Refund: The people we helped elect to office in Sacramento passed a tax refund in the last budget that is coming to most families THIS MONTH! Depending on your income and dependents, you will likely be receiving $200 to $1,050 in a refund from the state. More info here.
  • Healthcare Staffing Stabilization Bonus: This is the bonus for healthcare workers many of us fought for that was recently signed into law. Most healthcare workers will get $1,000 (full-time) and $750 (part-time). More info here.

BUT WAIT! There’s more you can do to help ensure a strong contract in 2023:

      1. Love Social Media? We need to share our stories publicly and proudly so our communities put pressure on our employers to value us properly. Step up to share your experiences.

I’m Ready for Online Action!

      2. Take Political Action. To win on our priorities, we will need to use every tool, including taking political action. Between now and bargaining we’ve got an election, which means we have an opportunity to elect healthcare champions that will stand with us in our coming fight. Sign up for your phone bank shift today.

Oct. 7, 2022 Campaign update

Bargaining Team Nominations are OPEN: Oct. 7-21, 2022

Our next contract negotiations are just around the corner. And across California, SEIU-UHW members agree on what matters most: pay, benefits, safety, and addressing the healthcare worker shortage. But management isn’t just going to give us what we want. We’ve got to be ready for a fight with a strategy to win. First up? It’s time to nominate our bargaining team!

What’s a bargaining team?

Our SEIU-UHW bargaining teams are made up of frontline SEIU-UHW members that step up to represent their coworkers in bargaining with the employer. Assisted by SEIU-UHW negotiations staff, the bargaining team sets the priorities and strategy, and helps make sure members get the strongest contract possible. They also lead in communicating with members about what’s happening in bargaining and helping move other members to fight inside the facility and outside to get the contract we need to provide for and protect ourselves, our families, and our patients.

What are the requirements to be on the bargaining team?

  • Be an SEIU-UHW member in good standing: Members in good standing are current on their union dues.

  • Sign the United for All Leadership Pledge and SEIU-UHW Code of Conduct.  As leaders in the organization, bargaining team members must carry out our strategy to win and treat all other participants with respect.  The bargaining team nomination form contains both the pledge and code of conduct. You can also download a PDF of the form, pledge, and code of conduct for Kaiser and Hospitals/Clinics .

  • Maintain 10 supporters: A leader must have at least 10 other members who work with them to help organize workers, move them into action, and keep everyone informed. Talk to your organizer/representative if you do not have 10 supporters under you for this campaign.

Are you ready? Nominate yourself for the bargaining team.

Submit your nomination

You can also download a PDF of the form for Kaiser and Hospitals/Clinics .

Let’s get started!

STEP 1: Create a strong bargaining team to represent us all at the bargaining table with management. Step up and nominate yourself to serve on the bargaining team.

Step 2: Get Strike Ready. In the coming months, we need to start saving – putting aside any bonus, checks from the state, or any extra help – so we’re ready to skip a paycheck if we have to go on strike.

Step 3: Build Public Support by Sharing Our Story. We need to share our stories publicly and proudly, so our communities put pressure on our employers to value us properly.

Step 4: Take Political Action. To win on our priorities, we will need to use every tool, including taking political action. Between now and bargaining we’ve got an election, which means we have an opportunity to elect healthcare champions that will stand with us in our coming fight.

OCT. 3, 2022 CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Getting Strike-Ready: Start saving and planning today

As our 2023 contract bargaining approaches, we have to be clear-eyed about what is in front of us. We are committed to winning raises that help us keep up with rising costs of living, protecting all of our benefits, and improving staffing in our facilities.

But we have to be sober about what it will take.

When SEIU-UHW members go to the bargaining table, we won’t put all our eggs in one basket. We will have a comprehensive strategy that includes political action and appeals for public support. But we must also be ready to demonstrate a readiness to strike in order to change our employer’s expectations of what healthcare workers are willing to accept in this moment of skyrocketing inflation, pandemic burnout, and acute staffing shortage.

We have just a few months to prepare both organizationally and individually. All of our budgets are strained by rising costs, but we must figure out how we can each save money to support our families in the event of a strike. Planning ahead means we won’t be at management’s mercy. All of our budgets are tight with rising costs everywhere, but there are some opportunities to save to fight for our future coming our way. As these opportunities come, I encourage you to save the money they bring in an account to prepare for a strike to protect our wages, benefits, and patients:

  1. California Middle-Class Tax Refund: The people we helped elect to office in Sacramento passed a tax refund in the last budget that is coming to most families as soon as October of 2022. Depending on your income and dependents, you will likely be receiving $200 to $1,050 in a refund from the state. Bank it for your personal strike fund! More info here.
  2. Healthcare Staffing Stabilization Bonus: This is the bonus for healthcare workers many of us fought for that was recently signed into law. Most healthcare workers will get $1000(full-time)/ $750(part-time). Bank it for your personal strike fund! More info here.

In order to win what we deserve in 2023, we need to be united, engaged in a comprehensive strategy, and financially prepared to show that we will be ready to strike! — and thankfully, we’ve worked to create some great opportunities to do just that.

Stay tuned for our next steps!
