Near the end of 2018, an overwhelming number of refugees and asylum-seekers were stuck at the US/Mexico border after traveling hundreds of miles with no access to basic needs. In coordination with other organizations, we travelled to Tijuana to provide first aid services and supplies to those in need.
After the passage of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), SEIU-UHW members helped to enroll 20,000 Californians in healthcare coverage. For many, this was the first time they had ever had health insurance. Larger enrollment events included healthcare workers performing screenings for chronic health problems.
Poor air quality in California’s Central Valley can be deadly for those with Asthma. SEIU-UHW members brought the “Let’s Get Healthy California” campaign to towns throughout the Central Valley through an asthma walk and health fairs with asthma screenings for the community.
